PLUS 6 Expert Tips on Keeping your Child on Track with Homework

  1. My child has a homework area that is a quite place to do homework, one without distractions from the television, other family members or video games.
  2. My child has a desk/table with good lighting.
  3. My child has all of the supplies needed—pens, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue—in his homework area so that time is not wasted looking for these supplies.
  4. My child does homework at the same time every day.
  5. My child has a homework schedule/calendar and follows it daily.
  6. My child has a snack before doing homework so being hungry cannot be used as an excuse to avoid doing homework.
  7. My child uses a timer.

PLUS! 6 Expert Tips on Keeping your Child on Track with Homework

  1. Remember, homework is the child’s work.
  2. A parent’s role is that of advisor and checker.
  3. Write a note or phone the teacher if your child doesn’t seem to understand a concept.
  4. Praise your child’s effort and good work.
  5. If your child says his homework was done in class, check it.
  6. If he says there is no homework and it goes on for several days, ask the teacher. Don’t assume the child is always telling the truth.
